Lt. Vernon L. Richards of the United States Army Air Forces’ 361st Fighter Group 374th Fighter Squadron, at the controls of his North American P-51D Mustang—a long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber—which he named “Tika IV.” Fitted with a Rolls Royce Merlin engine, the Mustang is widely considered the finest all-round piston-engine fighter of WWII to be produced in significant numbers.
