In 1960, the National Football League (NFL) ushered in its 14th franchise to begin play the following year in the twin cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul. Minnesota has long been a center for Scandinavian culture with deep ties to the famed Norse warriors from centuries ago, whom many believe to have actually inhabited the land. For this reason, the expansion team was named the Minnesota Vikings, the first professional sports team to feature its home state instead of city in the name. Old meets new as the history of the franchise is personified here with the depiction of NFL Hall-of-Fame quarterback Fran Tarkenton, who at the time of his retirement held every major quarterback record, and current All-Pro safety Harrison Smith, the anchor of the stout Vikings defensive unit since 2012.
